Try This For Fall Drought Trout

Early fall along the Texas Coast is supposed to bring a hint of cool air and a few north winds to stir the bays. But some years, summer just won’t let go. The tide lines bake under a relentless sun, the marsh drains to a trickle, and salt crusts the edges of every flat. Yet for the angler willing to adjust, this hot, dry stretch can reveal something special — speckled trout pushed far into the backcountry.

When salinity spikes in late summer and early fall, bait and predators alike move deeper into the bay systems. Shrimp and shad ride the tides well past the open flats, and the trout follow — sometimes miles up coastal rivers and narrow bayous. I’ve caught them beneath cypress knees where you’d sooner expect a bass than a speck. In these conditions, water flow and shade become everything.

In the mornings, topwater plugs can draw explosive strikes even in tight, shaded channels. Smaller profiles like a Spook Jr. or She Dog in natural baitfish colors mimic the shad and mullet that get trapped inland when tides stay high. As the sun climbs, switch to soft plastics rigged on light jigheads and work them slow — let that lure tumble through eddies near bends or under overhanging limbs.

If the water’s gin-clear, a fluorocarbon leader and muted colors can make all the difference. When it’s stained from boat traffic or runoff, bright hues like chartreuse or bone-white get noticed. Don’t overlook the sound factor either; a subtle rattle can call fish from surprising distances in still water.

These inland trout aren’t always big, but they’re wild and aggressive and they adapt to Texas’ fickle seasons. Anglers need to as well.

When the bays seem empty and the flats too still, that’s your cue to head inland. Somewhere up a winding river, under the heat haze and the shadow of oaks, the specks are waiting.
