Longtime Texas Fish & Game contributor Chester Moore has earned eight First-Place awards at the 35th Annual Press Club of Southeast Texas Excellence in Media Awards, including multiple honors recognizing his ongoing work documenting great white sharks in the Gulf.
Moore has covered sharks for Texas Fish & Game for years, writing about everything from Gulf great white discoveries and shark conservation to the latest research changing how anglers and coastal residents understand these apex predators. His reporting has combined firsthand field investigations with interviews featuring leading shark scientists, fisheries biologists, and researchers.
That work reached a new milestone with the documentary Gulf Great White Sharks: Return of an Icon, which earned the competition’s Best Documentary award. Watch it below.
Written, produced, and narrated by Moore, with videography and editing by Paul Fuzinski, the film examines the growing evidence that great white sharks aree regular visitors to Gulf waters and explores why this long-misunderstood predator is an important part of a healthy marine ecosystem.
The documentary has already received Best Outdoors Video honors from the Texas Outdoor Writers Association and premiered before a packed audience at the Museum of the Gulf Coast. It continues to be used to educate anglers, conservationists, and the general public about one of the Gulf’s most fascinating—and misunderstood—marine predators.
In addition to the documentary, Moore received First Place awards for a press release promoting the film’s premiere for his website www.gulfgreatwhites.com and for a public service announcement aired on iHeartRadio NewsTalk 560 KLVI that encouraged greater public understanding of great white sharks.
“These awards are especially meaningful because they come from a competition that includes outstanding journalists from television, radio, newspapers, magazines, and digital media across Southeast Texas,” Moore said.
“It’s encouraging to see conservation journalism recognized alongside traditional news coverage and a true honor to be recognized amongst so many great journalists connected with the Press Club.”
For Moore, shark reporting has always been about more than documenting an impressive species.
