I have reference great white sharks caught off the coast of Port Aransas several times since I started investigating the species in the Gulf of Mexico.

This reference is from a book Shadows In the Sea: Sharks, Skates and Rays (1966) and referenced at the Gulf Great Whites blog.
Now I have found the newspaper clipping from the Brownsville Herald noting the first of the catches that occured that year.
Interestingly, the shark is not only referred to as as “maneater” in the headline but in the text it denotes the great white shark or “maneater”.
My, how times have changed.
Now we treat them like they’re puppies, but that’s a subject for a whole other blog. I’ll just say sharks are sharks and they serve an important role. They are however potentially dangerous and that seems to be lost in some people these days to their detriment and to the detriment of sharks.
Anyway, I thought this was a cool find. Hope you enjoy look at these historical perspecitves.
