Elk: The .300 Win Mag is among the most popular calibers for elk hunting. The .30-06 has undoubtedly killed more and is also good for elk but with the ability to push a 180-grain bullet at more than 3,000 feet per second, the .300 Win. Mag delivers. It’s got plenty of knockdown power as well as the ability to shoot flat at long distances-both important qualities for elk hunting.

African Plains Game: The .30–06 is a perfect choice for many African plains animals from the medium-sized antelopes all the way up to zebra. It is good for shooting out to 300 yards and comes in a wide range of sizes and functions. This is not the load you want for buffalo or eland but if it’s a wildebeest, sitatunga, or bush pig you’re after, then what is likely your favorite deer rifle will get the job done.

Grizzly: A grizzly is one of the most dangerous animals to beg around, much less hunt. And with some hunts in terrain where bears could appear from seemingly nowhere you need a gun that can be a self-defense weapon as much as a hunting tool. Search out what bear guides use in Alaska and many recommend the .375 H&H which packs a serious wallop. The 300-grain bullet is the choice for bear hunters who want to ensure they make a quick, ethical kill on a big bear and ensure they return home from the hunt.

  1. Gordon Combs says:

Interesting article! However, Philip Massaro writing in the American Hunter says that hunters should have three hunting rifles, one from each of the following groups, in order to hunt around the world:
    1. 22 to 25 caliber (mine is a 243, but Hornaday’s new 6 MM ARC is calling)
    2. 300 caliber (he favors the 300 Win Mag, as do I)
    3. 375 to 500 caliber (he favors the 416 Remington Magnum)

If you have to limit yourself to only one rifle to hunt anything in the world, the 375 H&H Magnum is the way to go.

And now, let the arguments begin!
