The National Deer Association (NDA) welcomes the recently-released report, ‘Conserving and Restoring America the Beautiful’, from the U.S. Departments of the Interior (DOI), Agriculture (USDA) and Commerce (DOC), and the White House Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ), outlining a locally led and voluntary nationwide conservation goal to conserve 30 percent of U.S. lands and waters by 2030. More widely known as 30 by 30, this initiative is grounded by the idea that nature is essential to the health, well-being, and prosperity of every family and every community in America.

The National Deer Association (NDA) has been advocating for the role of hunting and fishing in biodiversity conservation and 30 by 30 solutions that allow hunters and anglers to continue our proud conservation legacy. We welcome the formal collaborative report by the Biden Administration that outlines a vision for how the United States can work collaboratively to conserve and restore the lands, waters, and wildlife that support and sustain the nation.

The report outlines eight guiding principles to obtain the ambitious goal. Early focus areas that fall within NDA’s mission include:

  • Expanding collaborative conservation of fish and wildlife habitats and corridors.
  • Increasing access for outdoor recreation.
  • Incentivizing and rewarding the voluntary conservation efforts of fishers, ranchers, farmers, and forest owners.
  • Creating jobs by investing in restoration and climate resilience projects and initiatives.

“NDA is happy to see the 30 by 30 report in its final form and with the inclusion of input provided by the hunting and fishing communities,” said Torin Miller, NDA’s Director of Policy. “Hunters and anglers are America’s original conservationists, and we must be a part of any solutions to conserve our nation’s terrestrial, freshwater, and marine ecosystems. While 30 by 30 is an aggressive goal, our communities are well-positioned to make a continued difference in the conservation of our national and global resources.”
