No stranger to catching big speckled trout, Texas native, Fred Murray, has crafted a new and innovative way to commemorate and exhibit your catch of a lifetime all while promoting catch and release with his one-of-a-kind resin creation; the Corky Cube.

Fred Murray grew up fishing upper Galveston Bay with his grandfather and dad. Years of long, grueling wades in the dark resulted in Fred catching some serious speckled trout and gaining a lot of respect for the predatory species along the way. Down the line, Murray also picked up woodworking. He began building custom woodworks and experimenting with resin back in 2017. Murray wanted to create something truly unique and brewed up an idea that incorporated his passion for fishing and his favorite lure, the Paul Brown corky, with woodworking. After going through several gallons of resin in his garage, his vision came to life.

Murray creates a Corky Cube by suspending an angler’s lure of choice into a 5”x 5” cube of resin. Once cured, Murray installs an LED light of your color preference into a handcrafted 1” wooden base that the cube lays on top of. The LED beams from underneath the lure and projects light onto walls and ceilings. Corky Cubes make a great addition to a trophy room or any room for that matter. Seeing is believing and the hours of fine craftsmanship exhibit themselves once the Corky Cube is completed and displayed.

Murray’s work has caught the attention of anglers, fishing guides and regular folks up and down the Texas coast; even that of Mr. Paul Brown himself. “When he actually ordered 3 cubes after the first one I made for him as a gift, I was stoked that the man himself wanted to actually spend money on some cubes for his friends and family. Someone came by my booth at an expo recently and told me Mr. Brown took him upstairs just to see the cube I gave him. That’s a pretty big milestone for me.”

Big speckled trout are a species that us Texans are blessed to have and need to do everything in our power to help protect. Thanks to Murray, Corky Cubes allows anglers to pay homage to their prized catch in a new age style with conservation in mind.
