The Real Story of the “Jaws”

The sinking of the USS Indianapolis stands as one of the most chilling maritime disasters in U.S. history — one where the threat of sharks added to an already unthinkable tragedy, made famous by an epic scene in “Jaws”.

In late July 1945, the Indianapolis completed a top-secret mission, delivering components for the atomic bomb to Tinian Island. After its mission, the heavy cruiser was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine in the Philippine Sea. Of the 1,195 sailors aboard, approximately 900 survived the initial sinking — only to find themselves stranded in open water, without lifeboats or sufficient supplies, for nearly five days.

In a special edition of Dark Outdoors® learn about the reality of “Jaws” and how much of what you see on screen was taken at least somewhat from reality.

During this time, the surviving sailors faced blistering sun, dehydration, hypothermia, hallucinations, and, most infamously, sharks. Oceanic whitetips and tiger sharks were responsible for preying on the wounded and isolated men, as the crew floated defenseless in the vast Pacific. Estimates of how many men were killed by sharks vary, but the terror they created was very real.

This horrific event became widely known to the public through Steven Spielberg’s 1975 blockbuster. Robert Shaw’s unforgettable portrayal of Quint featured a haunting monologue about surviving the Indianapolis ordeal — a scene that remains one of the film’s most famous and unsettling moments. For many, it was the first time they heard about the real-life nightmare in the Pacific.

However, the true story is even more complex and harrowing than Hollywood portrayed. And much of the movie “Jaws” is based i reality but taken up several notches.
