Monster Hogs
Tales of gigantic, long-tusked monster hogs prowling the woods of Texas and the American South have been told around the campfire for years. Now, game cameras and cell phone technology are showing many of these stories to be true.
Last week we shared the video of a gigantic hog on the other side of the world.
Just how big do wild hogs get here in Texas?
A 300 pounder is a large hog. Anything bigger than 400 and those that top the 500-pound mark are monster hogs.
This illustration made to our specs by Charles Dunn shows how big a 400-pound hog is in comparison to the average adult black bear and grizzly. Many people would be shocked to know how many bear-sized boars are roaming the forests of the United States.
There are hogs in Texas biggest than the average grizzly. They are rare but they do exist.
Monster Hog Production
For monster hogs to exist they need three things.
*The right genetics
*Food/cover
*Ability to reach old age
The vast wildlands of Texas offer all of those things and as you can see with these photos there are some huge hogs in the Lone Star State.

My largest hog weighted a little over 450 # & was killed in Panola county close to Gary Tx. Shot will deer hunting .
In all of the discussions about feral hogs, I don’t recall seeing anything discussion about the flea infestation on these wild hog. Yes they are fun to hunt and to process & eat but with fleas easily jumping from the hog to you while cleaning them can be a big problem. We have tried to carry Clorox/Water solution in spray bottles & try to douse them down with this before trying to clean them but obviously, we don’t always have that spray bottle handy! What are your thoughts?
Flea Control
If you burn wood for any purpose, keep the ash after straining it in an air tight container. Just a day or two before the hunting expedition day, pour out the ash on a mat overnight for it to absorb a liittle amount of moisture (hygroscopic) so that it is not too dry and powdery to be blown off the fur of the animal. You will work it into the fur of the animal paying attention to hidden places such as inside ears or where the fur on the body is dense. Work it thoroughly unto the animal and leave for a couple of minutes before starting to work on the animal. Also, brine a concentrated salt solution is effective when worked into the animal body just like the above mentioned and leave for a couple of minutes before starting to work on the animal. The two are traditional control measures of ticks on animals especially the very concentrated salt solution which is neater for all animals. All the best and write back. After the pig is dead put a rope around his neck and a spinal on the rope .Tie it to the back of your truck .Drag it a 1/4 or 1/2 a mile down a dirt road .Guess what all the ticks and fleas will be gone.?
Raid yard guard,spray around and on as you approach the hog,kills everything,fleas ticks,and lice,then wrap in plastic for the ride home,stop at the car wash on the way home and give it a good rinse!if possible don’t gut until you reach the house
